The rootstocks we use for growing finger limes include Swingle, Troyer, Rough Lemon, and others—all evergreen varieties. This is a key factor in successfully growing finger limes in cool climates. In regions like Australia, where frost can occur for up to three months a year, from early morning to sunrise, the choice of rootstock is crucial. Rootstocks such as Trifoliate or Flying Dragon tend to lose their leaves during this period and enter a form of hibernation, significantly reducing water supply to the scion. This leads to drought-like symptoms, including dieback at the tips of branches, leaf loss, and, in some cases, the death of the plant. This process slows the establishment and growth of the plants.
By using evergreen rootstocks, which maintain water supply even during frosty conditions, the scion experiences fewer symptoms of water suffocation. This ensures more consistent growth and reduces the risk of plant stress, promoting healthier and more robust finger lime plants.
