Several years ago we have notice unusually high number of different looking finger lime varieties which was coming from wild, finger limes are genetically very divers and also easy to cross pollinate, soon after, we have started breeding program, at the beginning buy isolating wanted trees in close space and leaving to chance for the future combinations and later doing targeted pollination.

All the seeds we got was taking many years before will show result, so we have explore crossing with other Australian native citrus trees, Most of the work we have done with Russell River Lime which produce fruit very early planted from seed, This characteristic in most of the cases has given us crossing result in 3-4 years, Further pollination of these hybrids with targeted finger limes will give new hybrids with more finger lime characteristics and early fruiting (seedlings), Also taste of the pearl significantly varies from regular finger lime, apart of taste other new characteristics are also showing.
Varieties of Hybrids
  • Almost all varieties of finger limes available on the market.
  • New Varieties of finger lime developed by OZ Fingerlime.
  • Cross between finger lime with one of the following: Russel River Lime, Round Lime, Wild Australian Lime/Sydney hybrid, Mt White Lime this combination produced F1 generation plants with 50% of finger lime and 50% of other parent genetics.
  • Cross between F1 parent and targeted finger lime variety with intention to enhance more of finger lime characteristics, this combination produce F2 generation with 75% of finger lime and 25% of Other variety genetics.
New colors of the skin and pearl, shapes of fruit and leaves, low temperature tolerance, multiple cropping per year size of pearls…Once when particular characteristics look promising we will plant hybrids on our farm/orchard for further assessment exploring their commercial value.

We are in process of planting largest genetic library in our block located in Lara next to Melbourne, finger lime varieties and hybrids with over 250 new DNAs.
